(Oh, look, there's a twelfth edition. I still only have the 11th.)
Today, when looking up the meaning of a word (okay, it was 'gerund'), I turned to my trusty copy of Chambers. Although no longer the official Scrabble reference, it's still my favourite dictionary. (Try looking up buckwheat. Unless you're from the States; it's a bit naughty.)

Everybody has words they can't spell, and then you are often wondering whether there should be a hyphen or not. For this, a good spelling dictionary is invaluable, and this one is recommended by the SfEP. It also includes indications of correct word division for soft hyphenation. http://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/acref/9780199545155.001.0001/acref-9780199545155
I edit a large range of scientific tests (nearly all branches of science). This handy little book helps with all the fiddly bits, such as, in today's paper, correct handling of the nomenclature of organisms. |
